India 60

Happy Independence Day, India. 60 tempestuous, tumultuous, glorious years.

Vande mataram.

Yes, it has indeed been tempestuous, tumultuous, glorious years. Partition at birth, subsequent riots, all pervasive poverty, famines and to add to it four wars in the first twenty-five years. This would have killed the soul and spirit of a lesser nation. But not India's.

Then came the test of India's democratic strength with the declaration of Emergency. Similar incidents in other nations reduced those nations to dictatorial regimes. But India fought it's way back to being a democratic state.

Then there was operation bluestar, the assassination of Indira Gandhi, riots thereafter and all these in that momentous year of 1984. Turmoil and turbulence were never so well illustrated. Yet India emerged unscathed.

There were economic reforms that were the best thing to happen in Independent India, the biggest ever Hindu movement, a historic right-turn at the centre, a nation on it's way to it's rightful place under the sun - all this in a little over a decade.

Today India is confident of her future and proud of her past. Its been a fascinating journey.

(Aside: The previous comment was funny.
Unfortunately, it wasn't me.)
